Saying that Miley Cyrus has had a busy few days is an understatement. In just under a week, Cyrus has been announced as the latest face of Gucci, hit the stage at 2021’s first big festival, Lollapolooza, and serenaded the lucky crowd at a private bash in the Hamptons over the weekend. That much excitement (and travel) would be a lot for anyone, but Cyrus made it all look easy in her frequent social media updates. Though she gave her fans glimpses of her performance wardrobe online, including a memorable custom jumpsuit Alessandro Michele created for her Lollapalooza set, Cyrus’ most interesting fashion choice happened during her downtime.

En route to New York, Cyrus shared an image of herself chilling out on her private jet in a piece from Thebe Magugu’s spring 2022 menswear show, titled Doublethink. The collection, which debuted in Florence last month, was the South African designer’s first foray into men’s fashion. The winner of the 2019 LVMH prize, Magugu creates clothes that are beautiful, but also tell a story. His vision for spring was inspired by journalist Mandy Wiener’s 2020 book Whistleblowers, which focuses on the heroes who have risked their lives to expose corruption and fraud within the nation’s political and financial systems. Magugu translated that into unconventional suiting and Western wear that subverted ideas about masculine power and dominance.

It makes sense that Magugu’s work would capture Cyrus’s attention; she’s an artist who has always appreciated the subversive. She and stylist Bradley Kenneth chose his “Red Strappy” suit, a crimson blazer, and matching trousers cut to perfection and accented with a mint-green necktie worn casually as a scarf. Decked out in Isabel Marant sunglasses and white cowboy boots that played up the outfit’s old West associations, Cyrus looked right at home lounging in Magugu’s creations.
