Penelope Featherington herself revealed this behind-the-scenes mishap.
Nicola Coughlan Accidentally ‘Stabbed’ a Costar Her First Day on ‘Bridgerton’
What would Lady Featherington say! Her own daughter using her fine accessories as weapons? The scandal. Yes, Penelope Featherington herself, Bridgerton and Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan, admitted on February 1's episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show that she…accidentally stabbed a costar.
“Umm…,” said Coughlan about the incident, trying to hide behind her hand. “Unfortunately that is true. So, it was my first day on set, and it was quite terrifying getting a big Shondaland Netflix job, and you think, I just don't wanna screw this up. So they said to me, ‘You're very tiny; let's put you in heels.’ And I thought, Yeah, I'll do anything you want me to do, yes.”
But despite her can-do attitude, there was only so much Coughlan could do to work with her period costume. “It became evident that with the corset and the heels, my balance was not so amazing? So I was walking along and I fell three times, and the third time I was holding a parasol, which in the wrong hands is a deadly weapon,” she recalled. We'd guess this was from one of the “promenading” scenes.
“I fell forward and stabbed Claudia Jessie, who plays Eloise Bridgerton, in the hand, and she just started bleeding. But she's still my friend!” Coughlan said. Friendship really does run thicker than blood.
After Clarkson joked that she needs easy shoes with her long dresses, Coughlan said falling down is a great way to tell costume designers you need more wardrobe options.
Nicola Coughlan, who, semi-spoiler, kind of plays two parts on the show, has been one of the biggest breakouts from the massive Netflix hit. And if you've seen the season-one finale, you know her storyline will definitely continue in season two. Hopefully, the wardrobe department gives her more comfortable footwear.
