Piers Morgan Says ‘Several’ Royals Have Thanked Him in Wake of His Meghan Markle Comments
In early March, Piers Morgan announced he was leaving his job at Good Morning Britain in wake of the backlash from his comments about Meghan Markle. For a full breakdown of that controversy, click here, but in a nutshell: After Markle’s tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey—in which she said the royal family didn’t offer her mental health treatment options when she was experiencing suicidal thoughts—Morgan said on air, “Who did you go to? What did they say to you? I’m sorry, I don’t believe a word she said, Meghan Markle. I wouldn’t believe it if she read me a weather report.”
Morgan’s defense of the royal family confused and upset many people, but how do actual royals feel about it? Well, if you believe Morgan, they’re grateful.
“I’ve had some messages communicated to me on behalf of several members of the royal family,” Morgan said during an interview with Extra. “I’m not going to go into who it was, but what I would say is, [they expressed] gratitude that somebody was standing up for them.”
After the initial criticism of his Meghan Markle comments, Piers Morgan attempted to clarify his stance—but the damage was already done. “[It was] not for me to question if she felt suicidal,"” Morgan said. “My real concern was a disbelief, frankly…that she went to a senior member of the royal household and told them she was suicidal and was told she could not have any help because it would be a bad look for the family.” He later tweeted, “I said I didn’t believe Meghan Markle in her Oprah interview. I’ve had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don’t. If you did, OK. Freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on. Thanks for all the love, and hate. I’m off to spend more time with my opinions.”
On March 9, a spokesperson for ITV (which airs GMB) announced, “Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain. ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”
