Queen Elizabeth Reportedly Gave Permission for Prince Harry to Name His Daughter Lilibet
Queen Elizabeth reportedly approves of the name Lilibet! A day after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced the arrival of their daughter, Lilibet Diana, more details about the queen's involvement in the naming process are starting to emerge.
According to an anonymous royal source who spoke to Page Six, the queen knew about and approved of the name Lilibet, which makes sense. After all, it's a special nickname that the queen's late husband, Prince Philip, and possibly others, used for her in private.
Meanwhile, People confirms that while the public wasn't made aware of Lilibet's birth until Sunday, June 6, the queen was informed beforehand. As noted in the royal family's post congratulating Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor is the monarch's 11th great-grandchild.
“It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world,” read a statement from the couple released on June 6, per People. “Lili was born on Friday, June 4, at 11:40 a.m. in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, CA. She weighed 7 lb. 11 oz. Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home…Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty the Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales."
It's unclear when the queen will be able to meet the newest addition to her family. Though Prince Harry plans to travel to the U.K. next month, his wife and their two children reportedly won't be making the trip. Thankfully, everyone got really good at virtual calls during the pandemic. “Both my grandparents do Zoom. They've seen Archie running around,” Prince Harry told James Corden in February 2021. I'm sure Queen Elizabeth is eager to take a look at little Lilibet over FaceTime ASAP—that is, if she hasn't already.
