"Is this what other people experienced all the time?"
Rebel Wilson Says Strangers Are Nicer to Her Now That She’s Lost Weight
Rebel Wilson recently lost weight, and now she’s opening up about the social side effects of her decision. Namely, how strangers are much, much nicer to her now.
“It’s interesting…. I liked to think I looked good at all sizes and stuff,” Wilson told The Morning Crew With Hughesy, Ed, and Erin, according to People. “And I’ve always been quite confident, so it’s not like I wasn’t confident and now I’m super confident.”
The actor added, “I think what’s been really interesting is how other people treat you…. Sometimes being bigger, people didn’t necessarily look twice at you. Now that I’m in good shape, people offer to carry my groceries to the car and hold doors open for you.
“Is this what other people experienced all the time?” Wilson asked.
Sadly, this is a familiar phenomenon. Shonda Rhimes shared something similar in 2017. “After I lost weight, I discovered that people found me valuable. Worthy of conversation,” she wrote in her Shondaland newsletter, according to Insider. “A person one could look at. A person one could compliment. A person one could admire.”
The same thing happened to Khloé Kardashian after her weight loss. “I definitely think the fashion industry, and people in general, look at me more now that I’ve lost weight,” she told Harper’s Bazaar in 2016. “Even on shoots, I would never have options for clothing. There would always be this attention on Kourtney and Kim, but I was too much work for [stylists] or they had nothing in my size.”
It should go without saying, but Rebel Wilson, Shonda Rhimes, Khloé Kardashian, and all of us are worthy of respect, love, and kindness—regardless of our weight. Or how much weight we've lost. Stories like these only highlight how fatphobic our culture is, and all the work we still have to do.
