Rihanna Finds the Season’s Essential Statement Coat

Sure, it’s easy to wear a classic trench or basic jacket, but where’s the fun in that?

Coats can be the subtle, finishing touch of a look or its entire focus. While neutral options will never go out of style, designers and celebrities are choosing off-beat alternatives in statement-making neon shades this season. Always ahead of the curve, Rihanna offered her take on the look last night in New York City as she headed to dinner at Carbone in Greenwich Village. While her wide-leg Rick Owens jeans and black blouse were a sleek combination, Rihanna’s key piece was the acid-green “Waisted” coat dress from Marina Moscone’s pre-fall 2021 collection.

Moscone’s creation would be chic in any color. Crafted from soft “sherpa bouclé” wool with hand-painted buttons, notched lapels, and a cinched waist, it is undeniably elegant. Still, its highlighter hue is what takes things to the next level. Few shades are as divisive as bright green, but Rihanna and stylist Jahleel Weaver decided to play up the neons. Savage x Fenty’s chartreuse Caged Lace gloves and an oversized emerald pendant from Los Angeles custom jewelry store RoseArk added to the effect. Their gradations of green allowed Rihanna to do what she does best: stand out.

Outerwear has become the focal point of Rihanna’s autumn wardrobe, and the colder it gets, the more stellar runway looks she pulls out.  In the last week alone, she’s worn Rick Owens’ voluminous zebra print coat, Prada’s off-the-shoulder parka, and Raf Simons’ pastel patchwork raincoat—each a headline-worthy statement piece. Moscone’s coat fits right in with that assortment. Its playful color and eye-catching details offer a fresh take on a closet staple. Sure, it would be easy for Rihanna to throw on a classic trench or basic jacket, but where’s the fun in that?
