Case in point: last night in Santa Monica, when she headed out to her favorite Italian restaurant, Giorgio Baldi, she arrived wearing an unexpected take on the performance hoodie. In Rick Owens’ Drkshdw hooded cloak, a waxed denim mini from the designer’s spring/summer 2021 collection, and one of Bottega Veneta’s woven mini-pouches, Rihanna channeled her inner goth. Black with a drawstring hood and lengthy train, Owens’ cotton sweatshirt was a dramatic twist on the tried and true pullover.
When accessorized with luxurious add ons like Kuboraum’s rectangular X5 sunglasses, a vault’s worth of diamond rings, and a pair of lace-up stiletto pumps, Rihanna’s hoodie lost all its sporty associations. Still, its ultra-soft material and flowing silhouette made for a comfortable transition piece with edge. Owens’ collections are never straightforward, but neither is Rihanna’s style. When the two come together, you’re guaranteed a fresh take on the classics. Sure, few can splurge on an $800 hoodie, but combining an oversized shape with an unexpected fabrication is a styling trick everyone can embrace.
