Rihanna Piles On Vintage Designer Pieces

The star dug into the archives.

Rihanna is almost always wearing looks fresh off the runway, or by a brand that’s just about to take off. Earlier this month, for instance, the superstar wore a brand new Fendi bag, as well as a pair of sweatpants by the emerging label Brain Dead with a cult following. That being said, like many celebrities nowadays, Riri knows the power of an archival vintage piece from a major designer. This weekend in Los Angeles, she dug into two designer’s archives for a casual stroll.

Rihanna’s pastel pink and blue look was perfect for spring (impeccable timing–the season officially arrived yesterday). Her checkered tweed coat is vintage Chanel from fall 1996, which she paired with a bright blue jumpsuit, and a statement beaded choker necklace from John Galliano’s Dior era (it’s from Nina Gabbana Vintage) that’s also circa the ’90s. She accessorized the outfit with a white top-handle bag and white pumps—but the two vintage pieces are the true stars of the look.

Rihanna’s not the only star who has been digging into the archives lately, either. Kylie Jenner recently wore a Versace top from 2005, Zendaya wore ’90s Versace on the red carpet, and for years Jennifer Aniston has been showing up to events wearing a throwback gown. In addition to being more sustainably-minded, the right vintage piece will always feel fresh and current. But there’s something special about Riri wearing vintage designer nonchalantly on the streets, like it’s her version of weekend casual wear.
