Dull, dry skin? Who is she?
Sarah Hyland Swears By This Drugstore Face Cream for Glowing Skin
Talking to Sarah Hyland feels like chatting with an old friend. Perhaps that's because I've watched her on Modern Family for nearly half my life, but our conversation easily flows between her favorite skin-care products and an impassioned speech about helping out-of-work stage actors during the pandemic. But the most endearing thing is when the 30-year-old actor pauses, midsentence, to tell her dog to stop barking. “I’m so sorry, my dog thinks that the dog outside that’s being walked is going to murder us,” she says. “Work from home, right?” Stars, they're just like us!
On the slightly less relatable end of things, Hyland is pairing up with Olay as an ambassador for the brand's new Collagen Peptide24 collection. “I love to partner with brands that give back and do good for the world, and Olay gives millions of dollars to help close the gender gap in STEM, which is very important to me,” she tells Glamour. “The new collection is great because it has the highest concentration of peptides in Olay’s products. Firm, wrinkle-free, even skin texture are all big concerns of mine, so it takes care of all of that.”
In addition to her partnership, we caught up with Hyland about the songs that keep her going (her picks will surprise you), the skin-care advice she swears by, and the beauty standards she wishes would change. Read on for her answers to Glamour's Big Beauty Questions.
Glamour: What's one beauty rule you swear by?
Sarah Hyland: Moisturize. Always moisturize, every morning, every night. That’s why the Collagen Peptide24 moisturizer is my favorite. And hydration. I drink almost a gallon if not a full gallon of water a day.
What’s one beauty rule you think is B.S.?
I think trends in general are kind of B.S. If you're comfortable in your own skin and you love the way that you look, then that’s the most important thing. If you feel good, you look good, and if you think you look good, then you feel good. I don’t think anyone else's opinion should matter on that. With that being said, always blend your foundation down your neck! That is not a B.S. “rule.”
What’s the best beauty advice your mom ever gave you?
My mom is the one who always told me to not stop your foundation at your jawline. Go under your chin, down to your neck in case it’s not the exact color as your skin, which is hard to come by. Then it won't look like what she would call “clown makeup.” I'm all about blending, and everything being a natural look.

It changes daily. One day it could be Dua Lipa, the next Hamilton, or Rent, or Tik, Tik…Boom!, or any musical in general. It could be Thoroughly Modern Millie! It really just depends on my mood.
How do you like to take a moment for yourself?
By making sure I have a good skin-care regimen every day. Skin care maybe isn't the ultimate act of self-love, but I do think it's a major act of love for yourself. You are literally putting moisture into your body by moisturizing your face. I think that when you set that time aside, be it two minutes or 20 minutes, it’s a way to focus on yourself and your body. You get to be alone with your thoughts and think things over, or say your gratitudes to yourself in the mirror.
Who are the women inspiring you the most right now?
Stacey Abrams, Kamala Harris, and RBG will always inspire me, forever and always. Women like my mother, who during quarantine has been making masks nonstop and has a portion of the proceeds go to the Actors Fund and other causes like the Biden-Harris campaign. She’s taken a time where she can't leave her apartment in New York and is putting it toward not only protecting people with masks that she’s making by hand, but donating money to really, truly amazing causes.
People in the arts community and live stage, they have been impacted so greatly—think about every chorus dancer, every stage manager, these wonderful people who are always coming together to bring happiness and joy and thought-provoking art to the public. They’re home, and they’re out of jobs too. I think people forget about that. They see actors on TV, but they don’t think about the ones on stage.
You’re stranded on a desert island with only three products. What are they?
Oh my gosh! Definitely the Collagen Peptide moisturizer. We don’t really know the climate of this island. Is it humid? Is it dry? No matter what, I’m assuming I need a moisturizer. Another one would be one of those cooling face masks. I'm not even thinking about my favorite products right now; I’m just thinking practically! And I would probably say the Olay Regenerist Retinol24 night serum, just to have that amazing dewy bright skin on the beach.

That just because you're an aging woman doesn’t mean you have to play a mom or a grandma. A lot of the time in film and television, you get these gorgeous, gorgeous women, and they remain gorgeous their whole lives, but then they get pigeonholed into these frumpy characters or women who don't have their life together. Meanwhile, as men age, the women playing their lovers or wives are 25 years old. It doesn’t really matter for them. They’re still playing these amazing characters. I know that it's changing, but that’s something that's bothered me my whole life.
