Sharon Stone Says Britney Spears Wrote Her a Letter in 2007 Asking for Help

“The thing with Britney Spears is so out of control and so awful.”

In late March, Britney Spears took to Instagram and shared some photos of women who inspire her—including Sharon Stone, Natalie Portman, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Miley Cyrus. Stone—who's currently promoting her memoir, The Beauty of Living Twice—stopped by The Kelly Clarkson Show on March 30 and was asked about Spears's sweet post. It turns out the two women go back a few years.

Stone told host Kelly Clarkson she actually received a letter from Spears in 2007 seeking guidance. “Britney wrote to me a very long and important and poignant letter during a very difficult time in her life—about the time when people would recognize it, when she shaved her head, wanting me to help her," the actor said. "And I was in a very difficult time of my life. I couldn't help myself. But the truth of the matter is, we both needed help. She needed help. I needed help. The true fact of it is it's very hard to be a very successful woman and not have everyone controlling you, taking your finances, and handling you."

She continued, "Women and, I'm sure, all of the young stars get handled. And you get handled so much that there is a huge breaking point. There's a point where you get broken. The thing with Britney Spears is so out of control and so awful. I can say certainly it's been very out of control and very awful more than once in my life. And I have certainly had it. It's very complicated to take control of your life. It's very hard to get control of your finances."

When Stone says “the thing with Britney Spears,” she's most likely referring to the pop icon's conservatorship, which doesn't give her full control of her life and finances. Her legal arrangement was outlined in the New York Times documentary, Framing Britney Spears, which sparked national discussion and outcry from fans. Spears actually addressed the doc in a March 30th Instagram post, writing, "I didn't watch the documentary but from what I did see of it I was embarrassed by the light they put me in ... I cried for two weeks and well .... I still cry sometimes."
