Singer Poppy Swears by This Cleanser to Remove Every Trace of Stage Makeup

Poppy doesn't shy away from a bold beauty look. The singer, known for her alien-like persona and distinct metal-meets-pop sound, is just as experimental with her hair—which has been everything from  bleached blonde to jet black—and makeup as she is with her music and stage presence. “With fashion [and beauty], I always describe it as wearing my insides on the outside,” she tells Glamour. “Because I'm a musician, I'm able to play with hair and makeup at my shows. I really love to play with color, it's just another form of expression for me.”

But for her upcoming wedding to fellow musician Ghostemane, Poppy is leaving the leather and bright colors at home and keeping things classic. “My wedding look is inspired by vintage glamour and also modern couture,” she says. “And working with Viktor and Rolf on the dress is just a dream come true. I couldn't have imagined a better pairing.” As the face of the brand's Flowerbomb fragrance, she'll also be wearing the new Marriage Limited Edition perfume to tie the knot. “It makes me feel very feminine and glamorous, it's a bold scent, but it's not overpowering.”

We caught up with Poppy ahead of the ceremony to chat about her wedding prep, the best facial she's ever had, and the women inspiring her the most. Read on for her answers to Glamour's Big Beauty Questions. 

Glamour: Have you been doing anything special beauty-wise to prepare for the big day?

Poppy: I usually just pay very close attention to my skin and always care for it the most. And I'm doing a lot of clean eating, and exercise, and Korean facials. Getting facials is one of my favorite things to do. When I'm on tour in different countries, I like to try out their facials locally to see if there are any different techniques and products that I can use. 

My favorite ever was in the Czech Republic. They used some device that was electronic,  and it was like these micro-shocks that tightened the muscles in your face to make your skin more lifted. And as they were moving from like left to right on my face, I could feel the difference happening. That was really cool. And then more recently, I got one in Paris that was really amazing. 

What's a beauty trend you're really into right now? 

Well, maybe like six months ago or so, I was into more of a minimal graphic eyeliner. But on my most recent appearance that I did for WWE, it was more of like a bold eye look where I use just like a teal paint that was imperfect but it was very colorful, and then a red lip. I think I'm just into more splashes of color, as opposed to trying to make things very refined looking all the time. I think it's okay if it's imperfect, it makes it more punk.

What's a beauty rule you follow no matter what? 

Take care of your skin. I think the quote is “your makeup is only as good as your skin underneath.” So even when I have had a long day, I still take the time to remove my makeup and do my full routine. It's a clean slate every day. 

What about one you think is BS?

I don't know if this is so much a rule, but I'm pretty anti-bronzer. I think it makes everybody look too similar.  And I don't really like it when my face comes to a complete angled point, it's a little bit excessive. I don't really know a lot of people that have totally angular faces, so [it's weird] when bronzer is applied to make it look like there's more dimension or angles there. It doesn't actually look appealing on a lot of people. And I myself have more of like, a baby face, I guess. So when you put on bronzer, it looks totally weird. I think that's also why I've always been drawn to brands like Chanel beauty because it's more classic and minimal.

 You can only use three beauty products for the rest of your life. What are they and why?

Okay, so these are all mainly products for skin because I love skincare. So I use Youth to The People Superfood Antioxidant Cleanser. I love it because I feel like it takes out all the impurities. I usually use it twice in a row, initially to take off the makeup and then the second time to clean my skin. It takes away everything.

The second one I've used for a couple of years now. It's the Rodial Pink Diamond mask.  I use it typically when I'm flying a lot because it's hydrating, but it also brightens the skin and makes it very glowy and evens it out. And I noticed that people will compliment my skin after I've just done that mask.

The last one would be the Kate McLeod Daily Body Stone. And that just very hydrating as well, especially in the winter months. And it gets rid of any scars that you have, I don't know if it's intended to do that, but I've noticed it will lighten any dark spots that are from like scrapes or any thing if you fall down. It also just feels great.

Other than facials, what's your favorite way to take a moment for yourself?

Facials are definitely my number one, but another thing I just like to work out as often as I can, especially when I'm on the road or like not at home. I try to find time to do that every day.

If you could change one thing about beauty perceptions in the industry or on social media, what would it be?

I would say to just find what works specifically for you and your face and your features. Because I think with this Instagram makeup guru world, people are trying to find themselves and they all end up painting their faces the same way and it looks really scary. So I think less is more. And
I think if you can be more simple with it like a lip, cheek product, and a mascara. That's a good basis to start with as opposed to going straight for the heavy handed foundation or bronze or all of that. 

What music has been inspiring you lately? 

I recently found this band called Buffalo Daughter that I'm really into. Also, this Japanese
composer named Shuta Hasunuma, it's a bit more like soundscape-y and electronic. Also, I really like this band called Yellow Machinegun. 

What's the last internet rabbit hole you've found yourself sucked into? 

A lot of prints, like cartoons or anime illustrations on Instagram. Once I get clicking, I'm always led to another page and another page, and I started buying certain prints that I really like here and there to decorate my room.

You have $20 and free roam of the drugstore, what are you buying? 

A Korean face mask, one or two of those. A mascara, a red lipstick—something that's very matte—and baby powder. 

 Who are the women who are inspiring you the most right now?

Style-wise—and also just life-wise, always—Audrey Hepburn, Eddie Sedgwick and Siouxsie Sioux.
