And the sandals are designer, obviously.
Socks and Sandals in the Winter? Katie Holmes Says Yes
A Katie Holmes outfit is, often, all about the shoe. This summer, she rocked Bottega’s square toe mules, and later in the fall, she also slipped on some sleek flats and affordable hikers. For winter, Holmes is trying out a new, unconventional style: socks and sandals. Obviously, though, her take on the oft-maligned look was designer.
Holmes hit the streets today in Manhattan in a sleek black coat, gray hoodie, and leggings, finishing off the errand fit with bright pink socks and chain-embellished slides by J.W. Anderson, which retail for $550. If you’re thinking her socks and sandals combo is a fashion faux-pas, think again. It’s been a huge runway trend recently, seen at the spring shows of Fendi, Simone Rocha, and Salvatore Ferragamo. But that’s just the thing—it’s usually a spring trend, not a winter one. “Spring is a nice moment for socks and sandals—getting the feet ready to come out of hibernation,” agrees Rachel Besser, Vogue market editor, when I solicited her opinion on the matter.
But is Holmes onto something here? I decided to crowdsource some more opinions from my Vogue colleagues. “It’s what I wear to run to the bodega,” says fashion news editor Sarah Spellings, who is a fan of the socks and sandals look. “Once again, she’s the queen of relatable style.” For others, it’s a throwback. “It brings me back to my days of playing basketball, wearing slides and socks,” says Besser, who herself likes to pair black socks with black Birkenstocks. “It feels familiar to me, in a nice way.”
But others, such as senior fashion writer Liana Satenstein, are against it entirely. “It’s slightly unsanitary to me,” Satenstein says. “If you’re walking on the street, think about all that nasty stuff that could get on your sock!” The jury seems to be out on this one—but that’s the sign of any great street style moment.
