"Every time I walk into a drugstore, I buy one. Seriously."
Sofia Carson Swears By This $9 Mascara for Bold, Dramatic Lashes
To call Sofia Carson a triple threat is an understatement. Sure, she’s an actor, singer, and dancer, but a better description for the 27-year-old is powerhouse. And while the pandemic has slowed things down for the rest of us, Carson is only charging forward. She’s been a fixture at nearly every (distanced) awards show this season—looking incredible, may we add?—has been honored as a UNICEF ambassador, performed in her own live-streamed concert, and is breaking out of her Disney roots by starring alongside KJ Apa in the pandemic-inspired horror movie Songbird.
On top of all that, she’s somehow had time to partner with Revlon and create two curated sets of lip and nail colors. “Joining the ranks of women that I admire so deeply like Audrey Hepburn, who has always been my forever icon, Gal Gadot, Ashley Graham, and Adwoa Aboah is extraordinary,” Carson tells Glamour. “This brand doesn’'t represent physical beauty—it represents the beauty and celebration of women in all of their glory.”
We caught up with Carson about the beauty rules she swears by, the exercise that keeps her going, and how she’s practicing self-care in these wild times. Read on for her answers to Glamour’s Big Beauty Questions.
Glamour: What’s one beauty trend you’re obsessed with right now?
Sofia Carson: I’m kind of obsessed with graphic eyeliner. I played with it a little bit in my music video for “Guess I’m a Liar,” and I’ve used it ever since in my performances. Even though I’ve always been more of an eye shadow girl, I’m into a really graphic cat eye. I even played with one that was black liquid eyeliner, with a little bit of silver on top, and I loved it.
What’s one beauty rule you swear by?
A beauty rule I swear by is something my mom has told me since I was a little girl, and that’s the happiest girls are the prettiest girls. No matter how much makeup you have on your face, or how little makeup you have on your face, your beauty will shine from within.
What life-changing beauty tips have you picked up on set?
The power of a good concealer, good contour, and mascara. Over the years I have really fallen in love with mascara, and how it can really open your eyes and lift your expression. Especially right now.
Fill in the blank. I love my hair…
AdvertisementI love my hair when it’s down, natural, and wavy. But I also love to keep my hair up in tight buns and ponytails, because it’s just the dancer in me.
What city or country gives you the greatest beauty inspiration?
Paris. Every time I travel to Paris I get so inspired by the beauty, fashion, and art. There is just such a timeless elegance in Parisian beauty, from their makeup to their fashion to even their grace.
You’re stranded on a deserted island. What three beauty products do you take with you?
I’d take my So Fierce Mascara, which I wear every single day—especially during quarantine, it’s been my best friend. I would take my Untold Stories lip shade from Revlon’s Sofia collection, which is the perfect nude-y pink, and then I would probably take some light coverage foundation, like Revlon Colorstay.

$14RevlonWhat colors are you loving on your nails right now?
I'’e always gravitated toward deep, dark colors or nudes. I’m obsessed with In the Woods from my collection or Black Cherry, which are the two dark shades. One has more of a purple undertone, one has more of a red. I also love Obsessed, which is more of a nude shade.

$4WalmartHow have you been practicing self-care lately?
I’ve been practicing self-care first and foremost by being kind to myself. I think that’s something this time has taught all of us. But also little things like beauty for myself every morning have helped. My go-to if I’m not going to set or working is just some light coverage. I wear my mascara, and a little color on my lips if I’m feeling it, or just a pretty bare lip. Those two things make the world of a difference. Oh, and brushing my eyebrows. That’s definitely a must.
What music have you been listening to to keep your spirits up?
I’ve been listening to a little bit of everything. “Wonder” by Shawn Mendes, Ariana Grande’s last album, Miley Cyrus, Dua Lipa. Lizzo always does a pretty remarkable job at keeping my spirits up.
If there’s one thing you could change about beauty perceptions, what would it be?
Our obsession with perfection. There’s this tendency, especially with social media and the world of Hollywood, to gravitate toward wanting to be perfect. Showing these beautiful, perfect, photoshopped or facetuned images of beauty sends the wrong message, especially to young girls who are growing up in this world with impossible standards of beauty. One thing we have to focus on is embracing and loving our imperfections because that is precisely what makes us beautiful.
How do you take a moment for yourself?
AdvertisementRecently in quarantine I’ve really enjoyed long walks. On weeks where I’m not really busy, I like to take about an hour or so walk everyday. That and exercise are my two ways of self-love during the day. I love Pilates. It’s not only incredible exercise, but there’s something really grounding and spiritual about it at the same time.
You have $20 and free roam of a drugstore. What do you buy?
I’d buy my So Fierce mascara. Every time I walk into a drugstore, I buy one. Seriously. That’s how much I love it. I would have to buy one of my lipstick and nail collections—like my Sofia Nude or Sofia Red kits. I’d probably go for the red right now. And then maybe the Maverick palette, which is my favorite for my eye shade.

Kill highlighter, marry mascara, screw lipstick.
What’s your most-used emoji?
Right now it’s the white heart.
Is there any reality show you’re obsessed with at the moment?
I’ve never been a reality TV watcher, but recently in quarantine, I’ve become hooked on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. It’s kind of fascinating.
Who are the women inspiring you the most right now?
My mom is forever my inspiration for all things. Gal Gadot—Wonder Woman—who I actually had the privilege of presenting with the Shero award at the MTV Awards. I’ve always admired her. And Ashley Graham. She’s redefined the face of beauty in the industry, and every time I get to work with her or I open social media, she always has such an empowering message of true beauty.
