Ready for a fresh batch of wardrobe basics? As we sink our teeth into 2021, it's only natural that we sit down to discuss the upcoming styles that will dominate for the year ahead. Even though basics tend to have a much longer shelf-life than seasonal trends, they do also go through style cycles which is why we're about to highlight the freshest basics of the moment and, consequently, which now feel outdated.

I think you'll agree with me when I say that items like mesh leggings are now safely a thing of the past while others like bike shorts are nearing their end dates. Of course, these are simply my opinions based on what I've been noticing in the fashion world and you should always feel free to wear whatever you please. But if you're looking for some guidance for your next closet clean-out or are simply curious to see which styles are hitting their expiration dates, look no further than the below six outdated basics and which pieces are replacing them. You'd even be wise to start shopping for your next restock now.

On the decline: Mesh leggings

On the rise: Slit leggings

In terms of legging trends, I think it's safe to say that mesh panel leggings are now a thing of the past. Instead of the "risky" see-through look, I'm seeing a lot more slit leggings which feel so fresh and happen go well with basically any shoe style.

Shop my picks:
Totême Cork Stretch-Jersey Leggings ($200)
H&M Slit-Detail Leggings ($40)
Only Leggings With Slit Hem in Black ($32)
ELOQUII Elements Split Front Leggings ( $25) $12

On the decline: Distressed T-Shirts

On the rise: Boyfriend tees

Every closet needs a few solid T-shirts and I think it's these boyfriend tees with a relaxed, lived-in look that are the most notable right now. Alternately, distressed and cutout tees seem to be on the way out.

Shop my picks:
Free People Marcy Tee ($58)
The Drop Lydia Loose Short Sleeve Drop Shoulder Jersey T-Shirt ($20)
Eterne Long Sleeve Boyfriend Tee Black ($95)
Topshop Oversize T-Shirt ($38)

On the decline: Skinny leather pants

On the rise: Wide and straight-leg leather pants

Sorry, skinny leather pants, these looser shapes are replacing you. Wide and straight-leg leather pants are the fresher version of this winter staple that look updated but are just as easy to style. Pants and jeans in general are becoming more relaxed, so it's no surprise that these are quickly gaining traction, too.

Shop my picks:
Agolde Leather-Blend Straight-Leg Pants ($300)
Eloquii Vegan Leather Wide Leg Pant ( $100) $50
& Other Stories Flared Leather Trousers ($379)
Mango Leather-Effect Straight Trousers ( $80) $60

On the decline: Bike shorts

On the rise: Knit shorts

Let's talk loungewear. Luxurious knit sets are everywhere we look these days, particularly when they involve knit shorts. And what could be better than something that's as comfy as it is cute? While bike shorts are still one of my go-to items for warm-weather workouts, I don't see them as a must-have basic anymore.

Shop my picks:
Spell and the Gypsy Collective Chloe Knit Shorts ($119)
Reformation Sanzo Short ($98)
The Upside Nitara Knit Shorts ($119.99)
Zara Wool and Alpaca Blend Knit Shorts ($39.9)

On the decline: Cigarette trousers

On the rise: Ultra-relaxed trousers

Suiting separates have been around for a minute now but this year, we're about to see one specific item take hold and that's what I'm calling puddle trousers. The runways confirm that these extra-relaxed and slouchy trousers will reign supreme, indicating an end to skinny cigarette trousers.

  Shop my picks:
Topshop Wide Leg Trousers ($45)
Mango Flowy Palazzo Pants ( $80) $50
By Any Other Name Pleated Utility Pants With Faux Leather Belt ($695)
& Other Stories Relaxed Wide Press Crease Trousers ($149)

On the decline: Chunky sneakers

On the rise: Retro sneakers

Is it 2021 or 1981? Based on the array of throwback sneakers we're seeing right now, it might as well be the latter. With gummy tread soles and neutral suede fabrics, these are set to be the biggest sneaker trend of the year, which only solidifies that clunky grandpa sneakers are on the way out.

  Shop my picks:
Adidas Originals + Lotta Volkova Sl 72 Shell, Leather and Suede Sneakers ($120)
Veja + Net Sustain Rio Branco Leather-Trimmed Suede and Mesh Sneakers ($140)
Nike Daybreak Sneaker ($90)
Reebok Club C 85 Sneakers ($70)
