The Hottest Trend at the Oscars? Dressing Like an Oscar

Stars were manifesting their trophies through style tonight.

There’s one thing on every nominee’s mind at the Oscars: taking home one of those little gold men. And at tonight’s Academy Awards, a number of stars seemed to be manifesting their acting wins by actually dressing like an Oscar on the red carpet. And why not? Go for the gold, baby!

Before the ceremony began, stars Leslie Odom Jr., Carey Mulligan, and Andra Day all took to the red carpet in gold ensembles inspired by the famous trophies. Odom Jr., styled by Avo Yermagyan, wore a golden, double-breasted suit by Brioni with the shirt and tie to match. The jacquard fabric is actually woven with gold silk and pure 24-karat gold thread—Yermagyan tells Vogue that Brioni is the only brand to utilize the fabric, alongside the Vatican.

Both Mulligan and Day chose daring, metallic silhouettes that would have been eye-catching no matter the color. Mulligan wore a strapless Valentino Haute Couture bandeau and dramatic, sweeping ball skirt covered in thousands of sequins. Whereas Day’s fitted Vera Wang dress was cut to reveal a whole lotta leg. (Angelina Jolie would be proud). Day’s dress, like Odom Jr’s suit, was also made of real metal, a result of a collaboration between Wang and a professional welder. While we’ve seen gold ensembles at the Academy Awards before—Emma Stone, Sandra Bullock, and Meryl Streep have all accepted awards in the color—incorporating the metal into your clothing is a whole new level. Shine on!
