That's 700 hours of embroidery, alone!
The Princess Diana Gown Kristen Stewart Wears in ‘Spencer’ Took More Than 1,000 Hours to Make
In late August, Neon dropped the poster for Spencer, the Princess Diana biopic starring Kristen Stewart, and I've barely thought of anything else since.
Draped over the skirt of a massive cream gown covered in gold and silver floral details, Stewart's Princess Diana is the epitome of grace and grief. Simply put, the poster is both highly effective promo (the movie drops November 5) and a work of art in and of itself.
It's a good thing the poster had such an impactful moment online because it took over 1,000 hours to make. According to Vogue Paris, the gown is an haute couture dress from Chanel that took a total of 1,054 hours to construct. “The dress is an evening gown in beige organza, enhanced with gold and silver sequins, which form fine floral branches,” Vogue Paris's Marthe Mabille writes. “With a whalebone bustier, the neckline is bordered by a delicately pleated tulle flounce highlighted with sequins and a satin band. A satin bow encircles the dress on the front while the skirt is fitted to the hip before its full length unfolds, with thousands of ruffles and gathers.”
According to Vogue Paris, the gown is a re-creation of a dress from the fashion house's spring-summer 1988 collection that was constructed specifically for the film with detailing by the embroidery house Lesage. It took five seamsters and at least 700 hours of embroidery alone. The choice to go with Chanel makes sense given Kristen Stewart's eight-year relationship with the brand. The actor has been an ambassador for Chanel since 2013.
The elegance of the dress and Stewart's devastating pose only further convince me that this film is going to be an Oscar contender on multiple fronts. “December 1991: The Prince and Princess of Wales’s marriage has long since grown cold,” a description of the Pablo Larraín film reads. “Though rumors of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at Sandringham estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting, and hunting. Diana knows the game. This year, things will be a whole lot different.”
Still don't believe Stewart is perfect for the role of Princess Diana? Just watch the trailer and get back to me.
