The Star of ‘Never Have I Ever’ Will Be Netflix’s Elizabeth Bennett

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan will star in an adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice."

Jane Austen fans are eating well this year. Not only will Dakota Johnson star in an updated Persuasion for Netflix, but Never Have I Ever star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan just signed on to another beloved adaptation for the streaming platform: She’ll play Elizabeth Bennett in the Pride and Prejudice–inspired The Netherfield Girls. Never have we ever been so down for a rom-com.

Teen movies that are secretly based on classic literature are literally a staple of our media diets. Clueless or 10 Things I Hate About You, anyone? And The Netherfield Girls sounds like a perfect addition to this canon. Per Variety, the movie will be a “fresh and contemporary” take on the novel à la Easy A (based on The Scarlet Letter…well, loosely). Becca Gleason will direct from an original script, and a release date has not been announced. The title seemingly refers to the many women of the story, including the five Bennett sisters, who encounter each other at Netherfield, home of Mr. Bingley in the novel (spoiler/reminder, that’s the guy who marries Jane).

Ramakrishnan rose to fame as the spunky Devi on Netflix’s teen comedy series Never Have I Ever, which will premiere its second season soon. Created by Mindy Kaling, the series held an open casting call to find its lead, which is how Ramakrishnan scored the role. This will be her first post–Never Have I Ever part.

And she celebrated her big news in an Instagram post on June 2, writing, “I had to keep this secret for so long but HERE YOU GO!!!! AAAA I’m so excited. @beccamillergleason is such a homie to me already. Couldn’t ask for a better first feature-film. Time to do Jane Austen proud🥰❤️”

She also shared a post to her Instagram Stories that read, “jane austen understood that nothing is sexier than standing seven feet away from someone, making brief eye contact, and then going home.” Yeah, pretty much!
