The Story Behind Kourtney Kardashian’s Death Metal Shirt

Kourtney Kardashian has been on a grunge-punk-rock kick while dating Travis Barker. In their PDA-filled relationship, she’s been mirroring his style with T-shirts reading Bite Me and Suck Me or in elevated knits complementing his flannel. This past week, while the duo was in Venice for the Dolce & Gabbana show, we saw the best example of Kardashian taking a note from Barker’s aesthetic. She was spotted hand in hand with Barker and wearing a long-sleeve shirt with the image of a half skeleton, half man chomping on his own intestines, which were bursting from his abdomen. She wore this shirt, a piece of merch from the band Cannibal Corpse, with a black Hermès Birkin 25cm bag.

The fantastically gruesome image, titled “Eaten Back to Life,” is by graphic gore artist Vincent Locke, a longtime Cannibal Corpse collaborator. Before Kardashian started dating Barker, it would have been an odd choice. Cannibal Corpse’s songs are a meat grinder of sounds: an acquired taste! My friend, who is an avid fan, describes the band as “one of the godfathers of death metal.” Imagining Kardashian zoning out to Cannibal Corpse’s hits like “I Cum Blood” and “Hammer Smashed Face” is an unlikely moment that wasn’t lost on metal fans. The group Best Coast noted on Twitter, “Someone play Kourtney Kardashian a Cannibal Corpse song and film her reaction challenge.” (I reached out to a rep for Cannibal Corpse to see if they had a comment reserved for the widely captured moment, but alas I haven’t heard back.)

Whether or not the band is on the top of Kardashian’s playlist is, ultimately, kind of irrelevant. Her stylist, Dani Michelle, noted that the reality television star borrowed the shirt from Barker, who already owns a hefty rotation of punk and metal T-shirts. “Kourt has told me before that his closet is an archive itself. She can pick any T-shirt to wear and it’s the softest, coolest thing ever,” Michelle tells Vogue. “Sometimes she just wants to raid it.”

For those looking to copy Kardashian, she handily has an article on her lifestyle website Poosh.com titled “Ways to Wear Your Partner’s Clothes,” with suggestions such as wearing an oversized leather jacket over a silk dress. The drummer’s style has been rubbing off on Kardashian in general, and the two have been in sync clothes-wise. Who knows, maybe she will become a die-hard Cannibal Corpse fan after wearing Barker’s tee. It would be (deafening) music to our ears.
