This Year’s Ultimate Grammys Accessory? Coordinating Masks

As seen on Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, and Megan Thee Stallion.

As far as awards season goes, the Grammys have always been a reliable hotbed for experimental red carpet style. Even with this year’s mostly virtual format, there were plenty of agenda-setting fits to be seen—but what impressed most, surprisingly, was the care and attention paid to ensuring everyone’s mask matched their look.

First, Megan Thee Stallion took over the red carpet in her tangerine satin gown, which she paired with a face mask in the same shade of orange. (The elastic straps of the mask were wrapped around her ears, which were dripping in Chopard diamonds, of course.) Then, Billie Eilish showed up in a tattoo-print pantsuit along with her brother Finneas, who chose a powder pink tuxedo. Both wore head-to-toe Gucci, with bespoke masks to match.

Harry Styles’s face mask in the same yellow plaid as his classic Gucci suit would have been enough on its own—but a lilac feather boa was on call to up the glam rock ante a little further. Finally, there was the floral face mask sported by Taylor Swift to match her embroidered Oscar de la Renta gown, which carried all of the romance and whimsy Swift has channeled throughout her most recent records.

It goes without saying that the past year has seen most of us regress to the most casual items in our wardrobe—let’s be real, the temptation to wear our favorite pair of sweatpants around the clock is too good to ignore. But could a coordinating face mask inject a little more fun into our post-lockdown style? If this year’s Grammys are anything to go by, the answer is yes.
