Tory Burch Just Launched the Most Chic Sunscreen

It's the first in a new collaboration with Shiseido.

Now that summer's almost here and we're traveling again, Tory Burch wanted her first big collaboration with Japanese cosmetics company, Shiseido, to be one of optimism and beauty. The result: two gorgeous, limited-edition sunscreens inspired by Burch's home in Antigua.

The packaging and design are as chic as one might expect, but it's more than just looking good on one's vanity. It's about making the product a part of your daily routine and thinking twice about getting ‘just a little color,’ which has taken on new meaning for Burch.

The designer had a skin cancer scare that turned out to be nothing harmful, but it prompted Burch to take a closer look at how she views her relationship with the sun. “It doesn't matter how old you are or what your skin type is because everyone is exposed to the sun and it's really dangerous," she tells Glamour. "Having a layer of protection is essential.” As a result, Shiseido and Burch are also supporting Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center with a grant to fund a one-year clinical research fellowship in dermatology focused on advancing skin cancer treatment and prevention.

The key word here is prevention, and the Tory Burch x Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protector Lotion SPF 50+ and the Clear Sunscreen Stick SPF 50+ do just that. They are invisible, lightweight formulas that are also ocean-friendly and free of oxybenzone and octinoxate. “The stick is amazing, especially for your lips, and over or under makeup,” Burch says. “You can also put it on the top of your hands, and it's not at all sticky. Plus, it's really easy to throw in your bag.”

And speaking of accessories, you didn't think Burch was going to stop with just a sunscreen collection, did you? To complement the launch, the company is also launching an exclusive fashion collection that includes a surf shirt, bikini, flip flops and tote in the same print inspired by the floral bottle design. Plus, both the bikini and surf shirt are made with the equivalent of UPF 50 to guard against UV rays.

While the beach might feel like an appropriate first stop for Burch and her family's summer travel plans, it's Paris that she's most excited about. “I haven't been able to go in over a year, and our family is there,” Burch says of her husband's side of the family. “I can't wait to go. And we'll go to Normandy as well, so that will be our first trip.”

So in the spirit of travel and exploration, we asked Burch to play our latest round of Glamour's Big Beauty Questions to find out what locale offers her the greatest inspiration, the makeup essentials she swears by, and the women empowering her now.

What is one beauty trend you’re obsessed with?

Less is more. But also, the importance of moisturizer and taking care of your skin. Especially when you’re exhausted and working so hard.

What is the best beauty advice your mom has ever given you?

It’s interesting because she and my father were absolute sun-worshippers during their youth, but always told me to stay out of the sun. They used to tan. I never was particularly interested in lying in the sun, but that was always the advice they gave me. With that said, I love sports and am an athlete—I played a lot of tennis—but I covered up a lot, too.

What city or country gives you the greatest beauty inspiration?

Antigua is heaven on earth for me. I spend my days in the garden. I’m working on a cactus garden right now and a rock garden, and my mother has been an organic gardener since the ‘70s, and to this day, teaches me a lot about gardening. Also the color and beauty of India.

Let’s say you can only use three products. What are they and why?

I love the Guerlain Longevity Concentrate. It’s the most beautiful smell. And then Olaplex shampoo. It’s an incredible shampoo and literally changed my hair. You don’t even really need conditioner with it. It’s easy and simple. And then, finally, Lipstick Queen's pinky nude shade.

How much time do you spend getting ready?

Not enough. [Laughs] People laugh at me because I’m always leaving the house with wet hair and I spend very little time getting ready or planning ahead. It’s way too off the cuff.

What is your favorite way to take a moment for yourself?

Taking our dogs, Chicken and Slim, for a walk. They're literally our therapy.

What is your go-to perfume and why?

We’re working on perfumes at the moment, but I love our Signature fragrance. Something that I’ve always thought about with perfume, is that I don’t think scent should have a gender. I’ve always worn men’s scents, and in our signature fragrance, vetiver, is a top note, and it has a woody and earthiness to it. My father has worn it, my brothers have worn it, so I kind of love that scent can be worn for all people and isn't associated with a gender.

What is the last Instagram hole you went down?

Live Auctioneers. It’s basically an addiction. My assistant is laughing right now because she sadly has to deal with my issue. [Laughs] And I’m addicted to pottery and porcelain, and it’s sort of this problem that’s hard to satiate. I’m obsessed with English, French, American, all kinds of pottery and porcelain! That’s why I love working on our home collection. I’d like to make it bigger, there’s just so much I want to do. Growing up with my mother, you would understand. She’s a genius at tables and flowers.

Who are the women who inspire you the most?

We just announced a year-long fellowship program in partnership with Dr. Jennifer Doudna, who just won the Nobel Prize, and the Innovative Genomics Institute. And Dr. Nabiha Saklayen, the CEO of Cellino—which is setting out to make cell therapies and stem cell medicine to cure various diseases—has been awarded the inaugural Tory Burch Fellowship at the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI). They are changing the world.
