Two Women Are Nominated for Best Director Oscars for the First Time in History

Chloé Zhao is the first woman of color ever included in the category.

The Oscars 2021 nominations are here, and they've made history. For the first time ever, two women have been nominated in the directing category in the same year.

The best-director category includes Chloé Zhao for Nomadland and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman, both of whom were also recognized at the Golden Globes, alongside Regina King for One Night in Miami. Though King was not nominated by the Academy, her film did garner a nomination for best adapted screenplay for Kemp Powers. With this nomination, Zhao becomes the first woman of color to be nominated in the directing category. She's also up for best adapted screenplay and best picture. Quite the morning for Chloé Zhao!

Viola Davis, too, set a new record, becoming the first Black woman to receive two best actress nominations. This is her fourth nomination in an acting category, making her the most-nominated Black actress in Oscars history. Her first (and, so far, only) win was for 2016's Fences.

The nominees were announced from London by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas at 8:18 a.m. E.T., because 818 is the area code for Los Angeles. Fun fact!

The late Chadwick Boseman was nominated for best actor for his role in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. He's been a front-runner all awards season long, with his wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, accepting on his behalf most recently at the Golden Globes.

Here's the full list of the Oscars 2021 nominees. Place your bets now, and don't forget to tune in to the ceremony on April 25 at 8 p.m. E.T. on ABC.
