Vogue Editors on the New Look of White House Style

“You can’t forget how much fashion talks,” says Tonne Goodman.

It’s been less than two months since the Inauguration, and already the Biden administration is making its mark on the fashion world. In a Good Morning Vogue segment we’re calling À La Mode, Vogue’s Viriginia Smith, Tonne Goodman, and Chioma Nnadi are joined by model Paloma Elsesser and contributing editor Gabriella Karefa-Johnson to discuss the new look of White House style.

Their review encompasses plenty of conversation-starting outfits. Karefa-Johnson points to the Pyer Moss coat Vice President Kamala Harris wore to the memorial as an important turning point; “it signifies the fact that we’re redefining who great American designers are,” she says. The sparkling teal dress and coat designed by the formerly little-known Alexandra O’Neill of Markarian that Dr. Jill Biden chose to wear for the big day is also a major talking point, as is Harris’s stunning purple Christopher John Rogers’s ensemble. Both breakout style stars in their own right, poet laureate Amanda Gorman and Ella Emhoff, stepdaughter of the Vice President, prompt a lively discussion about playing by one’s own fashion rules.

Not to be outdone, the White House men make a big impression here, too. Could President Biden’s dapper tailoring signal the end of the omnipresent baggy suit in politics? How does the Bernie Sanders meme seen around the world connect with Gen Z? As Goodman sums it up quite nicely, “You can’t forget how much fashion talks.”
