Vogue followed along with the rapper as he got ready for the Met gala.
Watch Lil Nas X Slip Into His ‘Royal, Powerful, and Slutty’ Met Gala Look
“I think we’re going to win the night,” Lil Nas X says shortly before he began getting ready for this year’s Met gala. Dressed by Versace, the rapper pulled off three showstopping outfit reveals on Monday’s red carpet. The trio of looks began with a beaded cape, which he then shed to reveal a golden suit of armor and then a bedazzled bodysuit. It was one of the night’s boldest and most memorable ensembles. And Vogue got a behind-the-scenes look at how Lil Nas X got ready for the epic fashion moment.
According to the star, doing a high-fashion-knight look was always in the cards for him—the Met gala just proved to be the right moment for it. “I knew I wanted to do armor before we even knew the theme,” says Lil Nas X, who is also drawn to gold in general. “Gold on the periodic table is 79—79 is my [lucky] number.” At the Carlyle Hotel pre-Met, Vogue watched as the rapper did final fittings, admiring the three over-the-top creations Donatella Versace created for him. “It goes from royalty to power to a little slutty,” says Lil Nas X. “The holy trinity.”
When the ensembles were fitted and ready to go and the hair and makeup team was done applying their finishing touches, it was then time for Lil Nas X to head on out to the party bus, where his glam crew helped him change into the final looks while en route to the venue. (He left the hotel in a Versace bathrobe and Timberland boots—“it’s kind of giving,” said Lil Nas X of the look.) Suited up in his regal robe, he and his team said a quick prayer and gave thanks before gracing the Met gala with one of the night’s best style statements.
