The couple channelled Studio 54 in two looks by Michal Kors.
Watch Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello Get Glam for the Met Gala
Is there an American nightlife institution more iconic than Studio 54? The now-defunct New York City club from the ’70s is exactly what Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello were thinking about for the 2021 Met Gala. In two glamorous looks by Michael Kors, they paid homage to the fabulous fashions that were often sported by celebrities back in the hotspot’s heydey. In a new Vogue video, we got to see just how the couple got glam for their big night.
The video began with Mendes and Cabello getting ready separately in different rooms, occasionally FaceTiming each other to check on their status. For Camila, the getting ready process began with eating some waffle fries before getting into glam, where her team applied a purple smokey eye and natural beach waves (major Cher vibes). “It’s giving purple, sparkles, and disco glam, ”says Cabello, who marked her first Met Gala this year. She was nervous—but happy to have a date. “Luckily I’m going with Shawn. I know him pretty well,” she jokes. Then, Kors himself stopped by to check on her, and to see how she looks in her slinky purple gown and feather boa.“It’s super glamorous, but athletic,” he says. “And it’s comfortable!”
Shawn, meanwhile, started the glam process by getting his nails painted black, then his hairstylist got to work on loose, bouncy curls (Mendes described the hair look best—as “textured, sweaty, and smooth.”) Then, the musician slipped into a leather suit, which he wore shirtless with tons of jewels. “I just wanted to tap into that ‘American rockstar who drinks a little too much’ look,” says Mendes with a laugh. Kors also stopped by and admired the look, describing it as “chic and ballsy.”
Once they were all ready for the event, the duo met up and admired each other’s ensembles. In the lobby, they unexpectedly ran into the Biebers “I like the no shirt,” says Justin. “Gotta flex.” The couple proceeded to hop into the party bus and headed over to the Met, kicking off an eventful evening.
