"Do you know who’s really going to save the earth? Old Black women.”
Whoopi Goldberg Is Writing a Movie About an Older Black Female Superhero
With so many Marvel and DC franchises out there, you might be thinking, “Do we really need another superhero movie?” Well, according to Whoopi Goldberg, we do.
But the superhero film the Ghost actor is currently writing won't look like your typical Avengers fare, a.k.a a bunch of straight white dudes running around in tights. No, instead, an older Black woman will be at the center of the storyline. The character will acquire new powers and has to learn how to use them.
“Since I was a little kid, I’ve been obsessed with superheroes,” Goldberg tells Variety for its recent cover story. “They’re all saving the earth all the time. But do you know who’s really going to save the earth? Old Black women.”
Per IMDb, this movie would be Whoopi Goldberg's first feature screenwriting credit. The icon is already an EGOT recipient, a.k.a one of only 16 entertainers to win an Emmy Award, Grammy Award, Academy Award, and Tony Award.
The View host received an Emmy for her work on the talk show; she was awarded a Grammy for the comedy recording, Whoopi Goldberg: Direct from Broadway; she earned an Oscar for her portrayal in Ghost; and she snagged a Tony for producing the Broadway musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie.
Sister Act 3 is being made for Disney+, and according to Deadline, Goldberg will reprise her famous role as Deloris Van Cartier. She'll also produce the film alongside Tyler Perry.

“For a long time they kept saying no one wanted to see it, and then quite recently it turns out that that may not be true,” Goldberg teased back in October 2020. “People might want to see it. So we're working diligently to figure out how to get the gang together. Listen—bad singing, great singing, okay singing, and then nuns. What's better than that?”
Nothing—except maybe her upcoming superhero movie.
