Yes, Colorful, Minimalist Fashion Does Exist

Camel doesn’t count.

If the most recent spring and resort collections are any indication, color, and wearing more of it, is on the mind. Even Vogue’s most ardent fans of all-black ensembles, fashion news editor Steff Yotka and editor Alexandra Gurvitch, are resolving to add more color to their wardrobes this year. “Nobody feels better about a sleek black dress than I do, but I can’t help but want a splash of color to reinvigorate my wardrobe this spring,” Yotka tells me. “While I might not go full Bottega Veneta color-blocking—at least not yet!—some new cobalt knits and bright red tights are sure to spice up my life and closet.”

So how do the most minimal of minimalists approach wearing color? (And no, gray and camel do not count as a color). By sticking to pale hues like buttery yellows and rusty oranges, as well as rich solids like burgundys and ultra blue, minimalists at heart can tap into the wonderful world of color on their own terms. Not to mention, these approachable shades will beautifully complement a wardrobe of neutrals. If you’re still daunted by the task of adding in more color, stick to familiar silhouettes. Bottega Veneta’s pale yellow textured ribbed zip up sweater, LVIR’s earthy orange pointed collar shirt with contrast topstitching, and The Row’s deep sea blue, button-up, menswear shirt would all be pretty hard to resist, even for the most minimally minded.

Let these four easy-on-the-eyes hues be your guide to incorporating colorful, but still minimalist, fashion into your wardrobe this year.
