How A Minecraft Movie Could Compare To Other Video Game Films At The Box Office Movie

A Minecraft Movie is expected to debut to significantly worse numbers than A Super Mario Bros
But assuming the $60 million figure holds, how does that compare to other recent video game movies? 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie made $146 million for its opening weekend in the US/Canada, going on to make $574 million domestically and $786 million internationally for a worldwide total of $1.3 billion. 2023's Five Nights at Freddy's, meanwhile, earned more than $80 million in the US for its opening weekend, going on to make $137 million in the US and Canada and $291 million globally.
A closer comparison could be 2024's Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which made $60.1 million over its first weekend in the US and Canada. It went on to bank $236 million domestically and $252 million internationally for a total of $488 million worldwide. 2022's Uncharted movie starring Tom Holland, meanwhile, made $44 million for its domestic opening; it ended up making $149 million in the US and Canada, along with $259 million from international markets for a global total of $407 million.
A Minecraft Movie stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen, with appearances by Jennifer Coolidge and Kate McKinnon. Jared Hess (Nacho Libre, Napoleon Dynamite) is directing the movie.
Minecraft is one of the most successful video games ever, so expectations are high for the movie. Deadline said it doesn't matter if the movie's reviews are good or bad because the game is so popular that its fans will come out to see the movie no matter what.
A Minecraft Movie isn't the only video game movie coming in April 2025, as Sony's Until Dawn film arrives on April 25. April also sees the debut of HBO's The Last of Us Season 2.
