First-party games counted for 6.9 million, a rise of 900,000 compared to last year. The future of game sales is also looking increasingly digital, as Sony says that 83% of software sales were digital downloads.

While this does pale in comparison to Sony's best-ever sales quarter, things are looking good for Sony lately. The company announced last month that it intends to invest approximately $463 million in Bandai Namco as part of a strategic partnership, giving it a 2.5% ownership stake in the massive games publisher. Meanwhile, Nintendo's new console generation is off to a flying start with 6 million Switch 2 consoles being sold globally in the seven weeks since it launched, while Microsoft remains as cagey as ever with the numbers related to its Xbox business.

In a few months, the PS5 will celebrate its fifth-anniversary, and while Sony hasn't spoken about a hardware successor yet, a few recent developments have given us a few clues on what we can expect from a potential PlayStation 6 console.
