Breakout Beyond revamps the nearly 50-year-old arcade game with local co-op and new features

Atari Revisits An Arcade Classic With Breakout Beyond

Choice Provisions is the developer behind Breakout Beyond, which modernizes the gameplay created by Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and Steve Bristow for the original Breakout. Essentially, players use Pong-like controls to bounce a projectile to destroy bricks that stand in their way.

Unlike the Breakout arcade game, this version will unfold sideways on a larger canvas. Breakout Beyond also introduces combos that can make the projectiles even more powerful while ramping up the resulting light show from the destruction. Another new feature allows players to slow down time and gain a greater control of the projectile, but it will come at the cost of a reduced score. There are 72 levels, and a second player can join in the action through local co-op. Additionally, there will be an unlockable endless mode with an online global leaderboard.

Atari hasn't set a date for Breakout Beyond, but it will arrive in 2025 on Atari VCS, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Atari purchased Intellivision last year, and insisted that the Amico is still going to be released. But for now, there's no indication that Breakout Beyond will be on the system that it was originally envisioned for.
