Israeli startup D-ID, known for its popular Deep Nostalgia technology, has unveiled the beta version of its new web app, chat.D-ID. This innovative platform enables users to engage in lifelike conversations with AI avatars, powered by the combination of D-ID’s text-to-video streaming technology and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. With chat.D-ID, D-ID aims to make AI conversations more engaging and accessible than ever before.
Enhance OpenAI's ChatGPT with D-ID's Innovative Web App: Adding a Face and Voice
D-ID, a startup that specializes in facial recognition and image de-identification, has launched a new web app called chat.D-ID that gives OpenAI’s ChatGPT a voice and face. According to the company’s CEO and co-founder, Gil Perry, this will allow more people to use the technology, especially those who cannot read or write. Additionally, the app aims to make it easier for elderly people to communicate with AI.
Perry believes that communicating with faces is more effective than text and increases the power of large language models by adding a face. When users open the web app, they will be greeted by an avatar named “Alice” and can type out a question or say their query out loud. D-ID notes that Alice can answer almost anything, from simulating a job interview to hosting trivia night.
While the app is still in beta, it will soon offer a variety of preset avatars that users can choose from, and users can also upload any image of their choice. However, users cannot upload images of celebrities or public figures. In a few weeks, the app will allow users to generate a character, such as Dumbledore from Harry Potter, and talk to them. Perry believes that having the right face when conversing with AI is important, as it helps users better understand complex information and feel more comfortable.
Chat.D-ID is currently free, but Perry notes that if the app takes off and becomes too much for the startup to handle on its own, they may start charging users for it. However, D-ID’s goal is to keep it free. Although some may find the new app a bit creepy, D-ID believes that giving AI a face will make it easier for people to communicate with the technology in their day-to-day lives.
D-ID has incorporated safeguards within its web app, as users cannot upload pornographic or violent images. The launch of the new app comes a week after D-ID rolled out a chat API for enterprises for branding and customer experience purposes. The company’s latest developments come as D-ID and other companies announced their involvement in a framework for the ethical and responsible development, creation, and sharing of synthetic media.
As OpenAI’s ChatGPT has dominated the internet and become increasingly popular, AI has become an increasingly trending topic over the past few months. D-ID’s new app aims to add a layer of realism to the technology. D-ID also announced today that it’s launching a campaign to use generative AI to strengthen global online support for victims of domestic violence alongside Spring ACT, a nonprofit organization, with the support of Microsoft Azure AI’s text-to-speech capabilities and Azure AI cloud infrastructure.
