The Call Of Cthulhu's Manga Adaptation Is Finally Available In English
H.P Lovecraft's 1928 short story has inspired countless artists over the years, including Gou Tanabe, who adapted it into this 288-page manga
The manga adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's classic short story The Call of Cthulhu is now available in English, just in time for Halloween. Written and illustrated by Gou Tanabe and published by Dark Horse, The Call of Cthulhu manga is a 288-page paperback with incredible cover art and a distinctive aesthetic that feels fitting for a Lovecraft story. It's very reasonably priced at $20--though Amazon is selling it for $18. A Kindle edition is available for for $12.
The Call of Cthulhu is the second Lovecraft manga release of 2024. In July, Dark Horse published At the Mountains of Madness Deluxe Edition, a 626-page doorstopper collecting both volumes of the classic Lovecraft tale. At the Mountains of Madness Deluxe Edition manga is on sale for $32.58 (was $50) at Amazon.
The Call of Cthulhu is often regarded as Lovecraft's best work of horror fiction. Cthulhu has inspired countless games, movies, TV shows, songs, novels, etc. The story is centered around a cult and the ancient, terrifying creature known as Cthulhu.
Lovecraft's original story, first published in Weird Tales magazine in 1928, is only around 40 pages, but Tanabe's adaptation is just shy of 300 pages due to its dedication to rendering scenes from the story in exhaustive detail.
Though most of the book is colored in black, white, and gray, there are eight full-color pages. It also has silver ink on the title page, and the cover art follows the chaotic, haunting style of previous Lovecraft manga adaptations.
Originally published in Japanese in 2019, The Call of Cthulhu was translated by Zack Davisson. It's one of numerous Lovecraft stories Tanabe has adapted since 2014, all of which have been translated by Davisson.

At the Mountains of Madness Deluxe Edition features wrap-around cover art with soft-touch lamination and spot gloss, 100gsm wood-free paper, several pages in full color, a title page in silver ink, foil gilding on the edges of the book block, and a satin ribbon bookmark. The cover art above doesn't really do this 626-page hardcover justice. If you check out the customer reviews on the listing, you'll see a user-uploaded image of the mammoth deluxe edition, and it looks absolutely stunning.
