Have your ship haul more cargo in Starfield
How to increase ship cargo in Starfield
Ship cargo hold location and functions
Here's what you need to know about the Starfield ship cargo:
- This is actually found via a terminal next to the pilot's seat. Interact with it and press the X button to transfer the loot from your character to the ship itself.
- If you talk to a vendor, you can press the LB button so you can sell goods directly from the ship's inventory.
- Take note that you need to place contraband items in a shielded cargo hold (more on this later). Otherwise, your illegal items will be automatically detected. You can learn more in our contraband and stolen items guide.
Regular cargo modules and shielded cargo modules
To increase ship cargo in Starfield, simply visit a ship services technician, select your ship, and press X to open the Ship Builder screen. This allows you to purchase additional cargo modules. The modules come from different manufacturers, but there are two baseline variants:
- Regular cargo - Tends to have higher storage capacity; cheaper compared to an equivalent shielded variant.
- Shielded cargo - Lower storage capacity; gives a chance to avoid contraband scan detection.
As an aside, some ships, such as the Mantis, may already have a shielded cargo module by default. If you still need to purchase these parts, you'll have to join the Crimson Fleet faction.
Tips when installing cargo modules
You can have as many cargo modules as you want, but you need to remember the following:
- Cargo modules don't require any rank in your Piloting skill. However, top-tier options require a higher Starship Design rank.
- Cargo parts have "snap" attachment slots (i.e. the circular icons). You'll need to find a viable module, such as a hab, where it can be attached.
- A ship can have several regular cargo holds and shielded cargo holds. However, the detection chance will still depend on the weight of the contraband that you're carrying.
- Cargo modules tend to be the heaviest type of ship part. As such, adding a lot will also increase the ship's mass. While this isn't a problem at first glance, this will affect the spacecraft's jump distance, speed, and maneuverability.
That's all you need to know about how to increase ship cargo size in Starfield. Since you're already checking out the Ship Builder, you might as well learn about how to increase a ship's crew capacity.
