"It's in the air."

The Last Of Us Episode 5 Will Finally Introduce One Of The Game's Most Challenging Elements

In the game, we learn that even after an infected individual has died, the fungus will continue to grow, consuming the body's mass to form a fruiting body and releasing spores that infect any human who breathes them. Characters that aren't Ellie have to use gas masks to prevent this. It should be noted that this was how Dina discovered Ellie's secret power of immunity in the game. In last night's episode, Ellie defended Dina by letting an infected bite her instead, while Dina was able to kill it.

This level of growth causes the corpse to become skeletal and brittle, attaching the remains to surfaces as it continues to grow. After enough time, the body becomes a "moss" that can fill entire structures with deadly fungal growths, sometimes blending in with their environment as we see above.

New episodes of The Last of Us air Sundays at at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET on HBO and Max.
