Joel is sticking around in Season 2

The Last Of Us Season 2 Will Include A Lot More Joel

Pedro Pascal's character on The Last of Us, Joel, was killed off in the Season 2, Episode 2 episode that aired on April 20. Despite that, Joel is not finished on the TV series--far from it.

Showrunner and writer Craig Mazin told TV Line that Joel and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) make up an "iconic duo," going on to assure fans they will see more of them, and in new ways.

"We do get to see them quite a bit together this season. And we also get to see interesting things happening with them--more, I think, than what we saw in Season 1," he said.

In Season 1, Joel and Ellie have a "beautiful relationship and a wonderful journey" together, or at least as much as a pair can have in the apocalypse, Mazin said. Their Season 1 relationship was "very simple," but in Season 2, the two have a "way more complicated" relationship, Mazin said.

"In its conclusion, just very resonant," he said of their journey together. "It gives you a lot to think about and also has a beautiful note of hope running through it. So, on behalf of all the Bella-and-Pedro stans out there, I'm here to say: Yes. A good amount is heading your way."

How can this be? For what it's worth, in the game, there were numerous flashback scenes and more time was spent between Ellie and Joel prior to the latter's death.

For more, find out what the cast and crew had to say about Joel's death. There are five more episodes coming in Season 2. New episodes of The Last of Us air Sundays at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET on HBO and Max.
