Gary Oldman Says His Harry Potter Performance Was "Mediocre," Reveals Hardest Scene To Film
Oldman is reflecting on his time in the Harry Potter franchise
Oldman made his debut as Black in The Prisoner of Azkaban. He played the role again in Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix. Fans often say Oldman turned in a memorable performance. But Oldman himself doesn't see it that way, for Harry Potter or any of his other work.
"It's like anything, if I sat and watched myself in something and said, 'My god, I'm amazing,' that would be a very sad day, because you want to make the next thing better," he said.
Also during the interview, Oldman revealed what he thought was the hardest scene to film in the Harry Potter series. He said this was the scene in Prisoner of Azkaban when he's lying by a frozen lake, with his soul leaving his body. Oldman said this took about a week to film, and all the time, he was just lying down and getting very cold and uncomfortable. "The hardest thing I had to do was lie next to a frozen lake," he said.
Oldman was cast as Black at the age of 46. Compared to his previous projects, the Harry Potter films required less travel and paid better, affording Oldman the time and resources to raise his children.
"Thank God for Harry Potter," Oldman previously said on The Drew Barrymore Show. "I tell you, the two--Batman and Harry Potter--really, they saved me, because it meant that I could do the least amount of work for the most amount of money and then be home with the kids."
