Gamera is one of several popular kaiju movie series that dominated Japanese cinema alongside other giant monsters like Godzilla. While the first film portrayed Gamera as a skyscraper-sized force of nature, he was an unexpected hit at the box office and was especially popular with children, so he was overhauled to be a more heroic character for younger viewers to root for in his battles with various giant monsters.
While this collection includes Gamera's earliest films, his big-screen adventures continued well into the 2000s. If you want to complete your collection, you can also pick up Gamera: The Heisei Era Collection for $53.86 (was $100). Like the Showa Era version, this boxset also has new art and a ton of special features on each disc. This is a smaller selection of films overall, featuring Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, Gamera 2: Attack of Legion, Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris, and Gamera the Brave. It's worth noting that this is part of Amazon's Buy Two Get One Free promotion right now, so if you add two more eligible Blu-rays, books, or other items to your cart, the cheapest item in your basket will be discounted to $0 at checkout.
Plenty of other giant monster flicks are on sale right now, too. No monster movie collection would be complete without Godzilla, and fortunately, Godzilla's Showa Era adventures have also been steeply discounted on Amazon. This is a massive 15-film collection that's on sale for $131 (was $225), and each movie is a crisp HD transfer that comes with both English and Japanese language tracks, archival interviews, and bonus material, and even a hardcover book detailing the big lizard's history. You can pair that with the recent Criterion Collection release of Godzilla vs. Biollante. This was released earlier this month and is on sale for $35 (was $50). One of the weirder Heisei Era movies starring the kaiju king, Godzilla vs. Biollante pits the legend against Biollante, a giant mutant plant genetically engineered from the cells of a rose, a renegade scientist's dead daughter, and Godzilla itself.
