Alongside traditional retailers, the Nintendo Switch 2 can also be bought directly from Nintendo--though the process is a little more in-depth than a standard retail purchase. Customers in the US who want to purchase a Switch 2 through the My Nintendo Store have to register their interest to receive an invitation to preorder the console. Nintendo will be prioritizing invitations for users who have had an active Nintendo Switch Online membership for a minimum of 12 months, as well as at least 50 hours of gameplay.

"Our motivation there, with the number of hours played, was really to reward our most loyal players and give them a chance to queue up first and have an opportunity to purchase the product." Bowser said of Nintendo's preorder system, noting that Nintendo's various retail partners will each have their own preorder system in place. Nintendo's system should, theoretically, also limit the ability of scalpers to buy up inventory for resale.

While originally scheduled for April 9, Switch 2 preorders have been temporarily delayed for US customers while Nintendo assesses the "potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions."
