However, in April 2024, producer Yu Miyake reportedly stepped down from working on Dragon Quest XII at Square Enix because of repeated delays for the RPG. This caused some public concerns about the development of the game.

The last mainline entry in the RPG franchise was Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age in 2017 (though the worldwide release was 2018). Square Enix did launch Dragon Quest III: HD-2D Remake this past November, with the first two games getting the same treatment sometime this year.

For more, GameSpot has chronicled the history of Square and Enix joining forces in the early 2000s, which led to the formation of an RPG powerhouse. The merger brought Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest under the same roof.
