When promoting a video game movie, Momoa says he wants his kids to "use their creativity in a different way."

Why A Minecraft Movie Star Jason Momoa Doesn't Allow His Kids To Play Video Games

Momoa's daughter, Lola, is 18 and has her own phone, the actor confirmed, but his son, Nakoa-Wolf, is 16 and doesn't have those privileges.

Momoa himself doesn't play video games either. He said, "My mother, when I was growing up, wouldn't let me play video games. She was like, 'Get outside, climb a tree, go skateboard.' I wasn't allowed to have video games."

Momoa's A Minecraft Movie co-star, Jack Black, is quite a different case. Whereas Momoa does not play video games--except for Street Fighter back in the day--Black plays a lot and has even appeared in some, including Brutal Legend and Broken Age. Black is also known for playing video games with his children live on YouTube.

So why is Momoa even in A Minecraft Movie? He said one of the producers of Dune and A Minecraft Movie, Cayle Boyter, recognized that Momoa had comedic chops and asked if he would be interested in the video game movie.

Momoa said he initially balked at the idea because he doesn't play video games himself and wanted to "respect everybody that's a gamer." But Boyter told Momoa that his lack of experience with the game is exactly why he wanted Momoa to be in the movie. "Because you're not supposed to know shit about it," Momoa said he recalled Boyter telling him.

A Minecraft Movie releases in theaters on April 4. It's directed by Napoleon Dynamite's Jared Hess and is expected to make around $60 million in the US for its opening weekend.
