- Canned tuna sold at Trader Joe's, Kroger, Costco, and more stores has been recalled over potential bacteria contamination.
- The cans of tuna may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a bacteria that can cause botulism.
- The FDA is warning consumers not to eat the affected tuna, even if it does not look or smell spoiled.
Canned tuna sold under several brands at Trader Joe's, Kroger, Costco, and more has been recalled over potential bacteria contamination, the FDA announced today.
On Friday, Tri-Union Seafoods voluntarily recalled select lots of canned tuna sold under Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s brand names.
The FDA reported that the “easy open” pull tab can lid on the recalled products has a manufacturing defect. Over time, the seal of the lids may become compromised and allow for contamination of Clostridium botulinum, a bacteria that can cause botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning.
The recalled cans of tuna were sold in the following stores and states:
Product | Store | States |
---|---|---|
H-E-B label | H-E-B | Texas |
Trader Joe's label | Trader Joe's | Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin |
Genova 7 oz. | Costco | Florida and Georgia |
Geova 5 oz. | Harris Teeter, Publix, H-E-B, Kroger, Safeway, Walmart, and independent retailers | Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Texas |
Van Camp's label | Walmart and independent retailers | Pennsylvania, Florida, and New Jersey |
The FDA is warning consumers not to use the recalled canned tuna even if it does not look or smell spoiled. If you have consumed the affected tuna and start to feel unwell, the FDA said to seek immediate medical attention.
To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection to the recalled tuna.
