Adele's Closest Friends Weren't Obsessed With ‘Easy on Me’ at First: ‘One Didn’t Like It'
Adele's first single in five years may be breaking serious records, but not everyone was obsessed at first. In fact, some of Adele's best friends thought it was just fine when she initially sent it their way.
On October 15, Adele dropped “Easy on Me,” the first taste of her upcoming album, 30, coming this November…and she didn't go easy on us. Her first song out the gate is a heartwrenching ballad that she wrote her son, Angelo, amid her divorce from his father, Simon Konecki.
“My son has had a lot of questions. Really good questions, really innocent questions, that I just don’t have an answer for.” Like? “‘Why can’t you still live together?’” the singer told British Vogue ahead of the drop. “I just felt like I wanted to explain to him, through this record, when he’s in his 20s or 30s, who I am and why I voluntarily chose to dismantle his entire life in the pursuit of my own happiness. It made him really unhappy sometimes. And that’s a real wound for me that I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to heal.”
She continued, “It’s not like anyone’s having a go at me, but it’s like, I left the marriage. Be kind to me as well. It was the first song I wrote for the album and then I didn’t write anything else for six months after because I was like, ‘Okay, well, I’ve said it all.’”
Since it hit Spotify, the song actually broke the streamer's record for streams in one day. The record was previously set by K-Pop sensation BTS for their song “Butter,” which hit 20.9 million global streams on May 23.

However, according to Adele, her friends weren't initially all that impressed. “I was saying the other day that I sent a snippet of me singing it as I was writing it to three of my closest friends here and one didn't like it,” she told BBC 1 Radio Breakfast show with Greg James on October 15. "The other one was like, 'Well, yeah, maybe, keep trying though,' and the other one was, 'I'm busy working.' So that was the perfect response for me."
"They loved my patience in it. I'm such a knee-jerk person," she added. "I'll be like, 'I don't like it, forget it!' I'm like that with my music. I'm like that with just things I want to do. I'm like that with my feelings and stuff and it was, I think it was clear to them in the lyrics that I've bided my time and I wasn't reacting to a reaction or anything like that. It was just a feeling that I had stirred on for a while."
In the same interview, Adele shared that she balled her eyes out when she wrote the song. "Normally I'm very not confrontational, but you can initiate something and be like, 'Hang on a minute, go easy on me!' Like, bear with me while I try to find my feet in a situation," she said. "There's something that's really hopeful about it as well as sad. I obviously balled my eyes out when I was writing it and when I was singing it for the recording."
Well, now we're all balling our eyes out, too.
