Queens supporting queens!
Beyoncé Thanks Meghan Markle for Her ‘Courage and Leadership’ After Oprah Interview
You could say the U.K. has the queen and the U.S. has Beyoncé. I mean, she's called Queen Bey for a reason. And Beyoncé recently recognized another royal after a certain tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey. Of course, I'm talking about Meghan Markle.
Beyoncé shared an encouraging message on her website for the Duchess of Sussex on March 9. She wrote, "Thank you, Meghan, for your courage and leadership. We are all strengthened and inspired by you." She also shared a photo of them meeting at the 2019 U.K. premiere of The Lion King.
Markle's interview definitely took courage. She spoke openly about the racist behavior she endured from the British media and within the royal family. The duchess was honest about how she was struggling with her mental health at the time.
"There was [a breaking point]," she said during the interview. "I just didn't see a solution. I would sit up at night, and I was just like, 'I don't understand how all of this is being churned out.' And again, I wasn't seeing it, but it's almost worse when you feel it through the expression of my mom or my friends or them calling me crying like, 'Meg, they're not protecting you.' And I realized it was all happening just because I was breathing."
Beyoncé isn't the only celebrity who's spoken out in support of Markle following her and Prince Harry's shocking interview. Markle's good friend, Serena Williams, shared a post on Instagram.
"She teaches me every day what it means to be truly noble. Her words illustrate the pain and cruelty she's experienced," Williams wrote. "I know firsthand the sexism and racism institutions and the media use to vilify women and people of color to minimize us, to break us down and demonize us. We must recognize our obligation to decry malicious, unfounded gossip and tabloid journalism. The mental health consequences of systemic oppression and victimization are devastating, isolating and all too often lethal."
She continued, "I want Meghan's daughter, my daughter, and your daughter to live in a society that is driven by respect. Keep in your memory the fruitage of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, self-control. Against such things, there is no law."
