Get Ready to Meet the Best ‘Bridgerton’ Character in Season 2

Die-hard fans know who we're talking about.

Dearest readers, it appears Bridgerton season two is almost upon us, meaning more scandal, romance, and debauchery is imminent. We shall, of course, be left wanting for at least a season as production shan't begin until spring 2021. But never fear, eager readers, as there will be plenty of gossip to impart as we await the return of our favorite lords and ladies…and, of course, our dashing rake of a duke. In fact, rumor has it a new lady will be introduced that has attracted the attention of one Lord Anthony Bridgerton….

Okay, I'll stop now. But seriously, ever since the moment Netflix announced on January 21 that Bridgerton season two is officially in the works, my Twitter timeline has been celebrating. However, many fans of the show aren't theorizing about what might be in store for the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page) and Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) or even Phoebe (Nicola Coughlan).

After Netflix seemingly confirmed through a note from Lady Whistledown herself that season two will center on Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey), fans of the novels by Julia Quinn are getting hyped to meet a woman named Kate Sheffield.

So who is Kate Sheffield, and why is Twitter excited about her? Here's what you need to know. (Warning: Book spoilers beyond this point…but remember, the show could always go in a completely different direction. Showrunner and executive producer Chris Van Dusen hasn't said anything about Kate…yet.)

She is a main character in the second book, The Viscount Who Loves Me. In the book, drama ensues when Anthony is set to marry Kate's younger sister, but she deems him unworthy of her sister's affections. I mean, at the end of the first season, he basically said he'd choose literally anyone to be his wife and “remove love from the equation,” so I wouldn't want him anywhere near my sister, either!

Anyway, they fall for each other, and it's basically the enemies-to-lovers story we all know and obsess over.

But wait, what about opera singer Siena Rosso (Sabrina Bartlett)? Well, in the books, his affair with Siena is mentioned only in passing, but here's what creator Chris Van Dusen told Entertainment Weekly before season two was announced:

“If we're going to tell Anthony's story in a later season, I always found it interesting to figure out what would have happened to Anthony before he came in the book. Exploring his background and giving him real texture and backstory.”

As for Siena, Van Dusen told E.W. that it was “too early to say” how she will play a part in the second season. “There's always going to be differences from source material, but the fans of the books are going to see that the elements they love of the books on screen too,” he promised.

Who will play Kate Sheffield? A mystery for now, but Twitter is waiting and manifesting:

Has anyone even confirmed she will appear in the show at all? No, but Van Dusen has promised a “love interest” for Anthony in a new interview with Today on January 21.

“We left him at the end of the first season at a bit of a crossroads, so I’m looking forward to jumping in and see how he fares in the marriage market,” Van Dusen said, adding that he does know where the second season is going. “We’ll be introducing a bunch of new characters. Anthony will have a love interest next season, and it will be as sweeping and as beautiful as viewers came to expect from the first season.”
