Writer and director James Gunn says Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige was blown away by the first footage he saw of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: Freaking Out About MCU Movie's First Footage
Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige are extremely excited about the first footage they've seen of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, says director James Gunn. Set to be released on May 5, 2023, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the third film in the Guardians of the Galaxy series and set to be the final installment in a trilogy for the main characters and writer/director James Gunn. While little is known about the plot of the film, star Will Poulter has been cast as the Marvel character Adam Warlock after being set up at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Gunn has brought over many of his collaborators from his time with the DCEU like The Suicide Squad composer John Murphy and Peacemaker stunt coordinator Wayne Daglish to work on the next entry in the MCU. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 began filming in November 2021, and like many productions, took a small break off for the holidays. Now filming has resumed and is rumored to run till April 2022 for principal photography, with reshoots scheduled for later.
In an interview with Collider to promote the new HBO series Peacemaker, Gunn revealed that Kevin Feige is very happy with the first amount of footage of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 he has seen. Gunn gave a special shoutout to Peacemaker actor Chukwudi Iwuji who has been cast in an unknown role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 with Gunn saying people are freaking out with how good he is in the film. Gunn did say the movie will be very different than what people may expect from a Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Gunn said:
"It's going great. Chukwudi, who plays Murn in Peacemaker, is one of the main characters in the movie and people are freaking out over how good this guy is. Literally freaking out. I think that I'm really happy. I gave a bunch of scenes to Marvel right before Christmas break. Kevin went... They were all really, really, really stoked. But also, it's not going to be the movie people... It's different than what people are going to expect. It's a hard road, but I'm really happy with it so far."
The Guardians of the Galaxy films have been some of Marvel's biggest critical and commercial success stories, as the first one was a breakout sensation and made the formally D-list characters household names. Part of the series appeal has been Gunn's trademark sense of humor and creative visuals, so it is not a surprise that Marvel is excited with what they are seeing. After the excitement around Spider-Man: No Way Home, the rumored cameos of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and the massive amount of expectations on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the fact that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has Marvel so excited is a very good sign.
While there is still some time till the movie comes out, the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now scheduled to come out six years to the date of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The characters have been major players in the MCU with appearances in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame and will next appear in Thor: Love and Thunder and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. It is highly unlikely audiences will see any footage of the film soon as Marvel has four films ahead to promote. It is currently unknown if San Diego Comic-Con will happen in July 2022 or if they will have in-person events. If they do, Marvel Studios may bring their films to the event or wait for D23 later in the year, which might be the first appearance of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 footage.
