Hottest tickets for pop music and festivals in planned for 2022

As the new year arrives, the general attitude is to keep pushing along and hope for the best. So in that fearless spirit, here are some of the hottest tickets in music planned for 2022.

It’s hard to stay optimistic about the return of in-person live events in the face of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic with headlines around the world punctuated by news of outbreaks and cancellations. But if there’s one thing that performers, promoters and stage crews have learned in the past year, it’s how to stay resilient and nimble.

As the new year arrives, the general attitude is to keep pushing along and hope for the best. So in that fearless spirit, here are some of the hottest tickets in music planned for 2022.

Noise Pop Festival

San Francisco’s Noise Pop Music and Arts Festival plans to celebrate its 29th anniversary with more than 100 independent-minded artists at venues across San Francisco and the East Bay from Feb. 21 to 27.

Among the must-see concerts is the first Bay Area performance in two decades by the Microphones and the Drums, who are expected to perform their 2011 album “Portamento” in full.

Björk 

The Icelandic pop singer plans to bring her first theatrical production, “Cornucopia,” to San Francisco’s Chase Center on Feb. 5 and 8, as part of a limited run of shows that will also take place in Los Angeles.

Directed by Lucrecia Martel and Björk, with co-creative director James Merry, the multimedia production made its world premiere at the Shed in New York in spring 2019, before plans to stage it in other cities were put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Journey

The Bay Area band has been working on new material, and its Freedom Tour 2022 is hopefully going to take those songs to live audiences soon.

Journey plans to hit 40 cities across the U.S. and Canada beginning in February, with stops scheduled at Chase Center in San Francisco on March 31 and Golden 1 Center in Sacramento on April 1.

Special guest Billy Idol supports.

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis 

In their first North American tour as a duo, the musicians plan to play at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland for two nights  — March 13-14 — in support of their collaborative album, “Carnage.”

Perfume Genius 

The indie pop alter ego of Mike Hadreas is set to return to San Francisco to play the Fillmore on March 21, as part of a tour in support of the release of “Set My Heart on Fire Immediately.”

It’s Perfume Genius’ first time back in the city since performing at theStern Grove Festivalduring Pride Month, before the San Francisco summer outdoor concert series’ season was cut shortdue to a flood.

Olivia Rodrigo

The pop singer-songwriter who was recently nominated for seven Grammy Awards, including album of the year and best new artist, announced that her “Sour” tour is scheduled to begin on April 2 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco.

Gracie Abrams, Holly Humberstone and Baby Queen support.

Coldplay

The British pop band, which performed the halftime show for Super Bowl 50 at Levi’s Stadium, plans to return for a headlining show at the home of the San Francisco 49ers. The April 23 stop is part of its2022 world tourin support of Coldplay’s latest album, “Music of the Spheres.”

R&B starH.E.R., a Vallejo native, is the support act.

BottleRock Napa Valley 

After a successful return in 2021, the luxe Napa Valley festival plans to go back to its traditional Memorial Day weekend spot with its usual mix of music, food and drink. The 2022 lineup has yet to be announced, but expect an eclectic mix that pairs well with Wine Country.

“Weird Al” Yankovic 

The novelty musician plans to bring his upcoming Unfortunate Return of the Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour, which includes more than 100 dates, to San Francisco with two performances at the Golden Gate Theatre on June 15 and 16. Each night will feature a different set list.

Comedian Emo Philips supports.

Tears for Fears 

The British pop duo, best known for its ’80s hits “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” and “Shout,” is set to embark on a North American tour in support of its comeback album, “The Tipping Point,” with a pair of Bay Area shows. The first local stop will be Concord Pavilion on June 1, followed by a concert the next day at the Shoreline Amphitheatre.

The former White Stripes frontman plans to set off on an international tour in support of a pair of solo albums, “Fear of the Dawn,” due April 8, and “Entering Heaven Alive,” due July 22. Catch him in the Bay Area on June 4 at Shoreline Amphitheatre.

High Sierra Music Festival

The eclectic music festival celebrates its 30th anniversary in Quincy (Plumas County) with a lineup that includes Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, Greensky Bluegrass, the Disco Biscuits, Goose, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Railroad Earth, Lettuce and dozens of other acts over four days from June 30 to July 3.

In addition to the live music, the festival will feature artist workshops, family activities and on-site yoga and meditation.

After their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the electronic music pioneers announced details of a 2022 North American 3-D concert tour. Built around music, 3-D visuals and performance art pieces, the show is scheduled to arrive in San Francisco at Bill Graham Civic on July 6.

Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Los Angeles rock act plans to embark on a 32-city global stadium tour, with a stop at Santa Clara’s Levi’s Stadium on July 29. The bill for the 2022 tour includes special guests the Strokes, as well as ASAP Rocky, Anderson .Paak & the Free Nationals, Haim, St. Vincent and King Princess, among others.

For the Bay Area stop, Beck and Thundercat are expected to open.

After pandemic delays, the Northern California megafest took over San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park during Halloween weekend for a jam-packed bash that featured more treats than tricks (though some festivalgoers felt duped when Young Thug, Marc Rebillet and Scarypoolparty canceled their appearances).

Now organizers of the outdoor concert hope Outside Lands will be able to secure its usual summertime slot, this year from Aug. 5 to 7. The lineup will be announced later this year, so stay tuned.

Pavement

The Stockton indie-rock band, best known for its early era-defining releases such as 1992’s “Slanted and Enchanted” and 1994’s “Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain,” plans to reunite for a tour for the first time in a decade. Pavement’s tour includes a three-night run at San Francisco’s Masonic from Sept. 12 to 14.

Shawn Mendes

The Grammy-nominated pop singer is scheduled to bring his 2022 Wonder: the World Tour, which is set for 64 arena dates, including a stop at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento in June 30 and Oakland Arena on Sept. 17.

The global tour is in support of his latest album, “Wonder,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200.
