Jill Biden's Inauguration Corsage Actually Has a Very Sweet Meaning

She's in great company.

Dr. Jill Biden, our new first lady (!), had many great style moments during her husband's inauguration on January 20. She started with that stunning blue coat by New York City-based label Markarian, designed by Alexandra O'Neill. Then, she transitioned into an all-white ensemble accessorized with a white corsage.

And it turns out that corsage actually has some meaning. It's part of a long tradition. Biden isn't the first, first lady to wear a corsage on inauguration night; both Mamie Eisenhower and Betty Ford did it, according to Vogue, which means Biden is in fabulous company.

Her corsage immediately captured Twitter's attention. “The thing that got me was Jill Biden's wrist corsage #happycrying,” one person tweeted. Another added, “Also can we talk about the cute wrist corsage Dr Jill was wearing.” A third noted, “Jill Biden’s wrist corsage gave me all the feels.”

“The fact that joe got Jill a wrist corsage like it's prom is melting my heart,” reads one response. And yup, my heart's melting too.

Ahead of the inauguration, Dr. Jill Biden posted to Instagram, “As we come together offering light and the ringing of bells, to those grieving loved ones lost to COVID-19, always know you are in our hearts.”

President Joe Biden (I love saying that!) offered some very inspiring words during his inaugural address. “This is democracy’s day,” he said. "A day of history and hope. Of renewal and resolve. Through a crucible for the ages America has been tested anew and America has risen to the challenge. Today, we celebrate the triumph not of a candidate, but of a cause, the cause of democracy. The will of the people has been heard, and the will of the people has been heeded. We have learned again that democracy is precious."

He then added, “I know speaking of unity can sound like a foolish fantasy these days, [but] unity is the path forward."
