Kate Winslet Took a Valuable Gift From the ‘Titanic’ Set—And Something Ironic Happened to It
Kate Winslet’s had many iconic roles throughout her decades-long career: Rose in Titanic, Joanna Hoffman in Steve Jobs, and, most recently, Mare in Mare of Easttown. Unsurprisingly, Titanic is the movie in her catalog she’s asked the most about. At this point we’ve heard just about every behind-the-scenes detail from the 1997 blockbuster—but Winslet did reveal something new in a recent interview with The New York Times. When asked by Maureen Dowd if she took anything from the movie’s set, Winslet revealed, “I did take a pair of Rose’s earrings, but somewhere I lost one.”
The irony of this is incredible. If you’ve watched Titanic—and let’s be real, who hasn’t?—you know lost jewelry is central to the story. Literal treasure hunters are searching for a necklace with the Heart of the Ocean diamond—which Winslet’s character, Rose, has been hiding for decades. Instead of handing it over, she, as Britney Spears famously says in “Oops!…I Did It Again,” drops it in the ocean in the end. So the fact Winslet actually lost one of Rose’s earrings is quite funny.
Most of Kate Winslet’s interview with Maureen Dowd was about Mare of Easttown, her hit HBO show that ended in late May. Winslet plays Mare, a no-nonsense detective investigating a grisly murder. For the role, Winslet refused to have any retouching done, both in promo posters and on the show itself. She opened up about this to Dowd, saying, “Listen, I hope that in playing Mare as a middle-aged woman—I will be 46 in October—I guess that’s why people have connected with this character in the way that they have done because there are clearly no filters. She’s a fully functioning, flawed woman with a body and a face that moves in a way that is synonymous with her age and her life and where she comes from. I think we’re starved of that a bit.”
