Samantha will not be part of it.
Kim Cattrall Just Subtly Responded to the 'Sex and the City' Reboot
The internet broke in January when HBO Max announced a Sex and the City reboot starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon. But Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha, won't be joining in on the fun. That's not exactly surprising—she's made her feelings about reprising her iconic role perfectly clear—but she's remained mum on the reboot since its reveal. Until now.
Cattrall “liked” a January 11th tweet from a fan that reads, “I absolutely love Sex and the City and whilst I am saddened that Samantha will not return, I applaud doing what is best for you and think this is [a] great example of putting yourself first. Well done, @KimCattrall.”
This tweet echoes what Kim Cattrall has said about returning to Sex and the City—specifically when conversations of a third movie were happening a few years back. “This isn’t about more money. This is not about more scenes. It’s not about any of those things," she told Piers Morgan back in 2017, per the Daily Mail. "This is about a clear decision, an empowered decision in my life to end one chapter and start another. I’m 61. It’s now."
Despite rumors of a feud, Sarah Jessica Parker insists there's no bad blood between herself and Cattrall. When recent Instagram comments suggested she disliked Cattrall, Parker replied, “No. I don't dislike her. I've never said that. Never would." She then said of the revival, "Samantha isn't part of this story. But she will always be part of us. No matter where we are or what we do."
It remains unclear how the reboot will handle Samantha's absence, but SJP is open to suggestions. When writer Taffy Brodesser-Akner tweeted, "Please respond below with your suggested plot line that explains Samantha's absence,” the actor replied she has “pen and paper at ready. X.”
