“Let’s do something new.”
Kristen Stewart Reacts to Fans Wanting Her to Play the Joker in Robert Pattinson Batman Film
Would Kristen Stewart reunite with her Twilight costar and ex-boyfriend Robert Pattinson in a comic book movie? Eh, maybe not. While some fans started an online movement to get the Spencer actor cast as the Joker opposite Pattinson's Bruce Wayne in the upcoming Batman movie, Stewart is more interested in creating a deranged role she can make her own.
“Not ‘no,’ but not the most stoked I’ve ever been. Let’s do something new," Stewart told Variety in reaction to the idea. She said she "love[s] the energy behind that” idea, but notes the role has been played often, and played well: “It’s really been done so well. I feel like, maybe, we don’t traipse over, but I love that gusto. Let’s figure something else out. I’m totally down to play a freaky, scary person.”
Stewart's right on the money here. While it's at least refreshing that fans could envision her as The Joker, she deserves more than to be slotted into a role that's already so defined. Let her loose on a serial killer script or something; let's get dark and twisty and original.
And if you're really jonesing for a Twilight reunion, Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene did recreate the famous vampire baseball scene this week, so at least there's that.
Even without Kristen Stewart, Matt Reeves' upcoming The Batman movie does feature a stellar cast, including Pattinson as the caped crusader, Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, John Turturro as mob boss Carmine Falcone, and Colin Farrell as The Penguin. The film is set to premiere in March 2022.
Stewart's next project is, of course, Pablo Larrain's Spencer, in which she plays the late Princess Diana. It hits theaters November 5, and has already received rave reviews from critics. An Oscar nomination for Stewart seems inevitable.
