The actor opens up about her new podcast, her favorite robe, and her “insanely hydrating” skin-care routine.
Laverne Cox Says These $20 Knit Pants ‘Feel Like Cashmere’
Laverne Cox isn’t used to being the interviewer. “It’s downright scary," the 48-year-old says of her new podcast, The Laverne Cox Show, for Shondaland Audio and iHeartMedia that’s now available. “You have to shape where the interview goes and give people an aha moment like Oprah does. It’s my responsibility now to do that, and it’s hard.”
But if anyone is ready to step out of their comfort zone, it’s the trail-blazing Cox, an Emmy-nominated actor, Emmy-winning producer, and LGTBQ+ activist best known for her star-turning role as Sophia Burset on Orange Is the New Black.
Plus, she knows what not to do. “For me, one of the reasons I’m really good at being interviewed is that I think I’m really good at pivoting,” she tells Glamour. “I try not to get too bogged down in what people are asking me because it’s not really productive.” She also wants to avoid overused questions like “What would you tell your younger self?”
“I’m over that because what I would say to my younger self today is different than how I would have answered a year ago, and it’s going to be different tomorrow. Let me be where I’m at today, because that’s enough.”
While some of the episodes will dive into heavy topics, she also wants the podcast to be a place of joy for listeners and guests like professor and author Brené Brown. “We’ll talk about Beyoncé, beauty, dating in your 40s, and more,” she says. “I’m trying to bring as many elements of who I am to the table.”
We asked Cox—who currently stars in Promising Young Woman and can next be seen in Shonda Rhimes’s limited series Inventing Anna—to tell us more about what she loves, from TV shows to pants. (Yes, pants.) Time to play Your Fave’s Faves.
The last thing I purchased that I loveI just got new glasses from L.A. Eyeworks today, actually. I have a very high prescription, so I can’t get really wide frames. The frames are really small and round, and they’re so cute. The ones in the photo for my podcast are fashion frames that we only used for the photo shoot. The ones I got today are actually for seeing.
The app that helps me chill outThere’s an app called iChill. That’s my wellness product, honey. iChill is a great app that goes through the six tools of the community resiliency model…to help me reset my nervous system, so to speak. It’s my favorite wellness resource.
My TV-watching essentialsI’m actually sitting on my couch right now, and I’m in a thick black terry cloth robe. It’s really super oversized and so comforting. I got it on Amazon and love it so much. I usually have some Throat Coat tea as well. I’ve also been eating sugar again, so I’ve been ordering these cookies from Mrs. Chips Cookies in L.A.—their chocolate chip cookies. They’re amazing.

$9Amazon My must-watch TV showsJust this weekend I watched The Mandalorian. Oh my God, it’s so good. I just watched P-Valley, and that was so good too. And I love Veneno on HBO Max. Those are few of the shows I’ve been watching a lot lately for research, but also enjoyment.
The only pants I wearI don’t wear pants around the house. Generally speaking, when I’m at home I don’t like to wear anything. Like, I’m not wearing anything under my robe right now. But Kelly Rowland sent me these gorgeous pants from her new collection. They're like cashmere. She did a collab with JustFab, and they are so hot and gorgeous. There are a few times when I’ve been home and done a Zoom and even though my bottom half isn’t on screen, I’ll wear these just to be all professional. I’ve been digging those lately. Otherwise I basically take everything off when I get home. I don’t like clothes. I like to be free. But I love my robe.

The Gleam Body Radiance by Melanie Mills Hollywood. My makeup artist will occasionally use this on me. She’ll mix it with some foundation so we can get an overall glow on my face, and then we use it on my body. When I walked on stage, it was very much that Goldfinger moment. It was that. It’s brilliant.

$45Amazon The lip balm that keeps my lips moisturized all dayI have been using Malin+Goetz Lip Moisturizer. It was in a gift bag, but then I started buying it. They got me. It just does the trick. When I’m not glammed up, I don’t really like lipstick; I just like to stay moist, and this does that. Plus, I don’t have to apply too much.

They have these incredible products, like their cleanser, mask, toner, etc. They’re insanely hydrating. I was glowing and my pores were like just not there anymore.

$60Tracie Martyn The book I recommend you read right nowThe Color of Law by Richard Rothstein. It’s about the history of residential segregation in America. I was having a conversation with someone, and they were like, “Structural racism…is that a thing?” It is. The book is a thorough investigation of the 20th century of residential segregation in the United States that is responsible for the wealth gap between Black and white people. In this post-2020 Black Lives Matter moment that we’re in, we should still be talking about structural racism.
